Rise of the Renegade
Deal Festival

Walmer Beach

The final Underground Pearl project was a re-run of Rise of the Renegade, but this time as a stand alone project. Members of the public were invited to add to the planted glow sticks around the boat Julie, in memory of the burning of the boats on Walmer beach in 1784. Story teller Barry O'Brien of Dover Community Radio and flautist Paul Chenour of The Zen Bicylcle Band performed in and around the boat as the sun went down.

Winch Box
Deal Festival

Winch Box featured a film of pianist Maria Immaculata Setiadi performing samples of Messiaen’s ethereal Vingt Regards sur l’enfant Jésus and Debussy’s exquisite second book of Préludes.

At a public salon held at the Sea Cafe on Walmer beach, Deal Festival’s Artistic Director Paul Edlin introduced Winch Box and salon leader Kath Abiker talked about the role of the ‘art salon’ and its historic background, following which there was an open discussion on the Maria Immaculata Setiadi film.

During the festival, Winch Box subsequently appeared randomly in unexpected areas of Deal.

Emergency Tutorial Unit
University for the Creative Arts

Set up in a white tent as an emergency field hospital, ETU facilitated unexpected support sessions for students where they could talk about their creative practices.

ETU is a happy place that offers an antidote to official tutorials. Survivor Salons offer philosophical discussions as mild remedies and act as a psychological first aid kit to guard against uncertainty with coursework and last minute panic with deadlines as well as helps to externalise student learning.

The Enterprise of Liberation
Creative Challenge Residential Workshops

As winners of Creative Challenge 2013 we were invided to join this year's week of residential workshops at L'École Supérieure d'Art et Design Le Havre-Rouen (ESADHaR) as workshop fascilitators.

Creative Challenge is a personal and professional skills development programme bringing together industry, academia and creative art students to explore opportunities in social and environmental entrepreneurship.

Cine Boat was commissioned to exhibit at 51zero Film Festival, a groundbreaking new festival of artists’ film, moving image and digital art that took place across the Medway towns of Strood, Rochester and Chatham between 10th-12th October 2014.

Cine Boat was invited to Wise Words Festival in Greyfriars Garden, Canterbury. 'A Boat Out of Water' it contributed to exploring the festival question of 'What community means to us today'. led by Kath Abiker, we also held a salon event that discussed the role that art can play in creating a new community.

Commisioned by LV21 for Medway's FUSE festival. The lighthouse lantern of the ship was transformed by vinyl images of glow stick dances made during the Lookout 21 Residency in collaboration with Kent Autistic Trust.

LV21 Lookout Windows

Commisioned by LV21 for the final celebrarion day of the Lookout 21 Residency Programme the windows in the Lookout of the ship were transformed into cathedral like light panes with vinyl images of the living light sculptures made working with Kent Autistic Trust during the residency.

The Search and Rescue of Lady Lovibond

Commisioned by Dover Arts Development and in collaboration with Astor College of the Arts this project was part of Kent schools INSPIRE programme, part of the Education Olympic Legacy Programme. Nautical threads examined Dover’s long nautical history through a range of connecting cultural and educational activities involving visual artists, writers, poets. Underground Pearl developed and delivered an interactive street theatre event involving 9 schools across Dover and Deal as well as other community groups. In preparation for the event we led school workshops that focused on combining literacy and art through collaborative practice.

Conserving an Endangered Language

This series of photos and film is a documentation of work with Deal Parochial School. Using language and action as the medium, the children of the school created a metaphorical ‘social vaccine’ against the loss of an endangered fishing language. Through celebrating nautical poems the children built connections with the sea, beach and local fishermen.

Commissioned as part of Cheriton Light Festival and taking street party and participatory practice to heart, our disco-car intervention enhanced the light festival's spirit of active celebration. Playing with the unexpected and the whimsical, a large revolving mirror ball filled a parked car in a Cheriton residential side street, dazzling and enchanting the street, throwing out orbs of glittering light.

Underwater Sea Forest

In prepartion for Kent INSPIRE Big Art Day Underground Pearl was commissioned to create a magical installation in the chain locker of the ship. Made from modelling balloons and lit by UV light, it filled the chain bin in the locker compartment which, devoid of natural light, is as dark as the ocean's depths.

- Duke the Super Shrimp: a temporary interactive sculpture by Colin Priest of Studio Columba.

- Cultural Laboratory: an ongoing interactive conceptual art installation researching a collective voice on the future of contemporary art in Deal.

- Cine Boat: a temporarily converted two seater Orkney Spinner, presenting its first screening, 'Angelfish', a short film by award winning director Micheal Tyburski. Cine-Boat went on to win first prize in UCA's Creative Challenge Award 2014.

Rise of the Renegade

Rise of the Renegade commemorates the event in 1784 when the then prime minister, William Pitt the Younger, in order to suppress the smuggling trade, ordered the burning of the boats on Walmer beach. This event-based art project magically illuminated Britten on the Beach, a unique storytelling and musical event that took place in and around the beach huts and boats.

Site Specific Art Salon

Underground Pearl hosted its first art salon on Walmer beach at the boat Julie. Its task was to navigate new perspectives of enquiry through a trans-subjective exchange.

Dr Terry Perk, course leader MA Fine Art at University for the Creative Arts at Canterbury, was invited to lead the salon and directed the exchange through the use of radical semiotics, unpacking the poetics of the boat through notions of technology, geography and site.
